What Good is Knowing Very Little?

Not Like Anyone Else – Part 9

In the previous post, I introduced you to the concept of a small-letter ‘c’ Christian.  Now I have the task of explaining why I believe in such a concept and how it can move us from “common” to uncommon”.  What I can’t say for certain is whether or not a small-letter ‘c’ and a capital letter ‘C’ Christian will see each other in Heaven.  I believe they will, but what I know for certain, that while on earth, there is a huge difference between the two.

The small-letter ‘c’ Christian appears to have their act together.  They attend church. They say they read there bible.  They will often use scripture to put others in check.  They will master quoting a few verses of the B I B L E (Bible).  They will recite prayers they heard their parents and grandparents say.  They will follow the traditions that have been passed down.  Speaking of which, here’s one (and I have many).

20160807 NLC Blog - What Good is Knowing Very LittleI remember as a young boy.  We would attend our family church which was very traditional in nature.  On the way, we’d have the radio on a popular music station, not the gospel station.  As soon as we made the turn on the church’s street, the radio had to change to the gospel station.  We would never make the mistake in not switching the channel.  While we justified this action by saying we’re reverencing God’s house or respecting the church, this was in fact a small-letter ‘c’ Christian thing to do.  Small-letter ‘c’ Christians focus on the outward, something God doesn’t.  He is concerned about the inward.  What’s in the heart. No matter how many times we changed the radio station, what was in the heart was the popular music station.  Not knowing God’s concerns and desires is a small-letter ‘c’ Christian characteristic.

Can you be something you know very little about?
This will make you think and maybe even search your heart.  Of course, this is what I’m pretty good at, making one think.  How can you be something you know very little about?  Now, here’s the scenario, you want to be something, but don’t put in the work or studies to become that.  For example, you want to be a doctor or surgeon.  How can you be a surgeon and don’t know what a surgeon knows? How can you operate without having the education or the training?

Try this one.   How can you be a professional athlete and not study and train for your sport? How can you be good at anything that you know very little about?  I will conclude and you will too that you can’t be anything knowing very little about the thing you wish to become.  Sounds to me like it’s time to do some continuous learning.

Back to small-letter ‘c’ Christians.  How can you be a Christian, when it’s something you know very little about?  This is “common” and possibly the reason so many are unsuccessful at being a follower of Christ.  [Going to the left.]  You see I don’t understand how your faith doesn’t work for you.  I don’t know what it’s like to not have my prayers answered.  I don’t know what it feels like to go a day, two days, a week, months, years without having a conversation with God.  Those are “common” things.  There is no way you can be “common” and a capital ‘c’ Christian.  I don’t understand how a Christian can go through life and not progress and be promoted.  The Bible doesn’t support such behavior for a Christian.

Can a person who doesn’t know Jesus truly be a Christian?
How in the world can a person truly be a Christian, but not know Jesus Christ?  Even when life throws it’s biggest and greatest punches, a Christian overcomes.  A Christian finds a way to succeed. A Christian doesn’t know how not to finish their race.  We are uncommon.  We are exceptional.  We are overachievers.  We are world changers.  The reason ordinary people are drawn to Christ is because we don’t know how to lose.  Even when we die, we have a way of rising again.  Is a small-letter ‘c’ Christian a Christian at all?  I’ll leave it to you to decide.
