Afraid of Speaking-In-Tongues

Speaking-In-Tongues Gone Wild

Taking Speaking-in-Tongues to the Next Level – Part 2

We have to ask ourselves this question. Why are we afraid of this topic? I often wonder, why are we afraid of it? What has happened to this subject? There are some topics that I think people intentionally make us afraid of. For example in the 80s, they used to talk about “the rapture” and the return of Jesus. Now that was frightening for us all. We were young teenagers then and had this idea presented to us that Jesus is coming back as if He intended to leave us behind. The idea of Jesus coming shouldn’t be frightening, but a relief. He’s not trying to set us up to be left behind, He’s setting us up so that we are not! There are some things in scripture that should catch our attention. The point is, what about this “speaking in tongues” has us so messed up? How did we get to this point? Let’s rid ourselves of the negative thinking this topic brings. Our goal is to get us to the next level, so that we are not afraid of something God has provided for us.

In order to do that we must obtain a better understanding of it so that we can be like Jesus and not like the world. Right now we have a worldly understanding of what it means to speak-in-tongues and not a spiritual understanding. The reason I know this is because very few people read the B I B L E. It’s no different than prayer. Most people pray in a way that is not like what the Bible says we should be doing. Therefore, I’ve concluded that most people speak-in-tongues in ways that are not based on the Scripture upon which we should be doing these things. The instructions we have been given do not support what we have been doing. So, we are about to go to the next-level.

Here are just three reasons why people are afraid and why we need to go to the next-level on this topic of speaking-in-tongues.

  1. It has been used and abused.
Anything used outside of its purpose, creates abuse in some shape, form, or fashion for that person or someone else. It is just that simple. Speaking-in-tongues as many of us have come to know has been misused if we hold it to the standard our Bible gives us.
  2. We have made it seem like it is elevated Christianity.
Speaking-in-tongues has been so bloated and so taboo, that it is seen to be greater than anything else in the Scripture or that God gives us. In fact, if you can speak-in-tongues, they make it seem like you have been elevated to a higher power. When people who speak-in-tongues go to the hospital, everything that is not healed or well, has to get up because you are in there praying in tongues. By the way, that is not the case. I have a lifetime of examples, where people who have thought that had to come up with an excuse as to why a person was not healed or delivered after they finished speaking-in-tongues. I tell you, we must go to the next-level. God’s word produces results. God produces results. And if speaking-in-tongues is a gift from God then it too produces results.
  3. It has been used for show.
This last one is touchy because you are not going to believe it, but it is true. Just like people can pray for show, there are people who speak-in-tongues for show. You may not have known that. So I’ll insert a scripture here. “When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them.” [1] Some people pray just to be seen. Therefore, you can pray for show. In the same way, you can speak-in-tongues for show since you can pray-in-tongues. Therefore we have to watch out for those who are showy or what I call simply acting. Some people are nothing more than good actors when it comes to this topic. They go through the motions because they think that’s what they should be doing. When it is done for show, there is no grace, no faith, no anointing, and God’s Spirit is not on it. Going through some act, some performance, so to speak, is what people do when they don’t know the truth behind what they should be doing.

Why are we afraid of this topic? The main reason is because we don’t know enough and two, people who don’t know what they are doing take the lead. In fact, if you read the Bible’s commentary on speaking-in-tongues, you’ll have contrasts to how it is presented and how it is normally practiced.

I have now introduced you to where we’re going on this topic of speaking-in-tongues. If I were you, I would buckle my “spiritual” seatbelt and stay with me for this ride. It just might get a little bumpy.

Question: What is it about speaking-in-tongues have you seen that has pushed others away from this topic?
