Zephaniah 3:17  When I need Him most, why does He seem so far away?

In this blog post, I want to focus on why and what makes you think God is so far away from you when you need Him most.

When I need Him most, why does God seem so far away?

timthumb.phpMost of us have been taught to believe God only exists in Heaven which is far, far, from us on earth. It’s normal to believe that God doesn’t live here amongst us. It’s also common to see Him as weak and inactive in our lives and situations. We’d rather believe He’s abandoned us when we need Him most. It’s the most common answer.

Because this is what most of our society knows and thinks we are conditioned to believe that the devil has more power. Even the movies we watch show that good is most often overcome by evil. You’d be surprised that the scripture more often than not contradicts this popular thinking.

Take a look at this one quote from Zephaniah 3:17:
“For the Lord your God is living among you . He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With His love, He will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”

Its first notion indicates something that is unheard of…God lives among us and it doesn’t stop with other common truth-shattering information about God. He is a mighty savior. In other words, He’s like a superhero who wants nothing more than to rescue you. He has only good thoughts of you.

Stop thinking like everyone else.
So what does it take to step away from thinking like everyone else?

  1. Learn to train your eyes to look for the things that make you common. Look for common beliefs and behaviors.
  2. Once you can see the norms of life, try to picture what’s possible outside the norm. If people say God won’t answer such a prayer, be willing to see past what everyone else says and believe that He will.
  3. Train your ears to hear things with a different perspective. You don’t have to be a member of the “common” class. In order words, defend yourself against social norms.

Changing what comes naturally.
How do we change what comes normal like believing God is far away when needed the most?
We first start with what we hear.
Stop listening to anyone who tells us what everyone else does.
We don’t go with the status quo and dare to believe that He is among us, He is mighty to rescue us, and He delights in us regardless of what society says about Him.

Until next time continue to be no-longer-common.
