Is falling asleep in church my fault or the preachers?

Have you ever been in a church where the preacher puts everyone to sleep?  Check out this verse of scripture that I’ve heard some preachers use to justify their boring messages.

I will begin with Acts 20:9 NLT ” As Paul spoke on and on, a young man named Eutychus, sitting on the windowsill, became very drowsy. Finally, he fell sound asleep and dropped three stories to his death below.”

I find it very funny that a preacher who teaches God’s word uses scripture to make himself feel better about putting people to sleep with their message.

The truth to this passage is found in Acts 20:7 NLT “On the first day of the week, we gathered with the local believers to share in the Lord’s Supper. Paul was preaching to them, and since he was leaving the next day, he kept talking until midnight.”

The reason Eutychus fell asleep wasn’t because Paul was boring, but rather he was trying to finish everything he had to teach during his short visit and before he departed on his travels.

What happens next doesn’t follow what happens when the preachers we know put their congregation to sleep.

“Paul went down, bent over him, and took him into his arms. “Don’t worry,” he said, “he’s alive!”  Then they all went back upstairs, shared in the Lord’s Supper, and ate together. Paul continued talking to them until dawn, and then he left.  Meanwhile, the young man was taken home unhurt, and everyone was greatly relieved.” (Acts 20:10-12 NLT)

Some ministers and preachers place the blame on their congregates sleeping during their message on them, while other ministers and preachers place the delivery of their messages on themselves.

Question: What are your thoughts – who should get the blame?  I would like to hear your comments.  Leave a comment below.
