Dreams: The Journey to Greatness
Any dream or great work is like planting a tree. If you desire having the benefits from the tree, one must ask the question, when is the best time to plant the tree?
“The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” – Chinese Proverbs
I see two distinct meanings in this proverb:
- Don’t put it off. If you haven’t already planted your dream [your tree] 20 years ago, don’t put it off, do it today. The dream will take a long time [20 years] to reach its fullness.
- Small starts produce big returns. The growth of a tree takes time. It starts small, but after a time [20 years], the dream, the tree, will come into its fullness.
While I’m not a big fan of “Chinese Proverbs”, I said to myself, what does The Bible have to say on this matter?
Don’t put it off.
“Don’t put it off; do it now! Don’t rest until you do.” – bible.com/116/pro.6.4.nlt
There’s no benefit in putting off one’s dream. In fact that’s what ordinary people do, put it off which results in never doing it. We can’t afford to be ordinary; it’s not enough. Do it now, put that dream, that goal, that desire into motion.
Small starts produce big returns.
“And though you started with little, you will end with much.” – bible.com/116/job.8.7.nlt
Here’s why doing it [putting your dreams into motion] is important. What starts small produces big returns. Ordinary people discredit an idea because an idea is a small thing. Taking a first step is small when heading to a distant land and seems like an impossible journey. But do what the uncommon do, take the 20 year journey. Every dream, every person, every success story started small. Even when a couple gives birth to a child, the child starts small and it takes years for that child to develop into that tree, the person they’re meant to be. Your dream, your plans, your future will start small. What seems insignificant, just fast forward 10 years, 20 years, it becomes something significant, a mighty tree.
What are you waiting for?
Question: What dream, idea, or plan can you plant today so that you can see its fullness tomorrow? Leave us a comment.
