Impacting More Than Just Yourself

Part 3 – Recreation Transforms Today

This might be a challenge for me, but I like challenges.  I want to convince you that today is a gift.  I want to make sure you never look at one single day the same as any other.  Each day has its very own fingerprint and can never be replicated.

Today is a gift.
Ordinary folks see their days as all the same.  They see the pain, the challenges, the repetition, the stresses and the disappointments.  As I say quite often, you find whatever it is you are looking for.  If you look for the bad, you’ll find it.  If you look for problems and issues, you’ll surely find some.  As I tell couples, if you look for infidelity, you can find that too, but if you look for good, you’ll find good.  Whatever it is you’re looking to find, you’ll find just that.  Seek, knock, and find.  Are you looking for the same results in today that you had yesterday?  Are you looking for better results?  How about better experiences?  If you look for the same, you find the same, but if you look for something different, you’ll find just that.  Today is a unique gift.

Every Day a Friday
Think of it this way.  You can’t get yesterday back no matter how hard you try and you can’t get to tomorrow without going through today.  So what do you do about it?  Are you dreading the fact that you’re in today?  Are you wishing to get yesterday back?  Or are you wishing tomorrow would get here sooner?  If either are the case, you’re missing the gift of today.   Many years ago, my wife and I decided that we would never have another bad day and so far so good.  We made it our plan to make every day a Friday like the book Joel Osteen wrote implies.  We didn’t want Friday to be more anticipated than Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.  So we did something about it.  We make each day special and find reasons to look forward to them all.

So what are you going to do with today?

Everything But Work Really Matters
The gift of today is everything but work.  If you had only one day to live would you actually spend it working?  No, you’d spend it doing everything else but working, you would spend it recreating.  You would find the essential most important activities you’d like to do, so why not make this a theme for your daily living?  Do what matters most.  Make that your priority.

Here’s what normal people do.  They give up living to work.  So much so they waste their lives away never having lived.  Don’t let that be you.  Now don’t hear what I’m not saying.  I’m not anti-work.  I’m anti- the wrong work.  I’m anti- you doing the things that don’t bring you joy, excitement or fulfillment.  I want you to do the things that matter the most, thusly making your day the gift that it is.

Re-create Your Day
Recreation is defined as the time spent not working.  It can also be viewed as re-creation.  Meaning you get to create over again.  Since we’re talking about a day, how can you recreate what makes today special?  I’m giving you an opportunity to re-create your day.  You can make it and each one after something special.  Say ‘no’ to having a typical day ever again and ‘yes’ to enjoying every gift of a day God gives.  Look for the gift and find ways to look forward to what your day brings you.  This is what it means to be uncommon, you do whatever’s necessary to be uncommon.  In the words of Michael Hyatt, “today is a gift, now go make it count.”
